You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4th, not with a parade of guns, tanks and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy and the flies die from happiness.
We fly or flag, listen to our favorite Lee Greenwood song and get all teary eyed. We get in the car or we walk down the block to go watch the fireworks after spending some time at our local freedom festival, where we enjoy one too many hot dogs, one too many pretzels, way too much ice cream. We get extra day off from work to spend with family and friends, or to mow the lawn and trim the bushes.
But most of all we sit back and take a moment just to be thankful we live in independence, freedom, liberty and safety. We pray for those who are not.
So, may you be able to spend this 4th of July weekend doing the things you want to do, where you want to do them, with whom you want to do them with. May you eat till you explode, play till you drop and laugh till you cry.
